With his mistress Nell Gwynn, Avington became the heart of her prestigious party palace, in which the royal court attended. The lawns located next to the River Itchen provide a picturesque scene for welcome drinks before your reception in the house. The venue provides a choice of rooms to host your ceremony, the ballroom being the most spectacular with gilt plaster work, hand painted masterpieces and vast windows overlooking the rolling parkland. History
The history of this stately home can be traced back as far as 961 AD, recorded in the Doomsday book. It was gifted to the Bishop of Winchester by the reigning King. It was used as a priory for the monks of Saint Swithun, before being acquired by King Henry VIII for use by the Royal Court. Portraits of the Tudors and Kings still hang on the walls of this incredible estate. The estate was then passed through multiple royals, including King Charles II after his return from exile. It was saved after its occupation by the army during the second world war by the Hickson family until sold in November 2020. Today the parties still continue.
